Also called southern peas, field peas, crowder peas, and black-eyed peas, this heirloom variety is an improved Pinkeye Purple Hull type cowpea. Plants are upright, compact, and high yielding. You can harvest the delicious and edible immature leaves or the 6" pods at the green shell stage (about 62 days in). You may also leave the pods to dry on the plant where they will turn from green to a deep purple color. They can be boiled, frozen, canned, or dried. Green seeds can even be roasted like peanuts. It is reported that this variety has a tolerance to cowpea strains of southern bean mosaic and cucumber mosaic viruses.
Sow seeds in full sunlight at about 1" deep and about 1-2" apart. Thin seedlings to 3-4" apart. Germinates in 8-10 days.
